A paper recently published in the journal PNAS details how scientists tracked the life, death, and afterlife of an American mastadon called ‘Fred’. Using his tusks, that develop rings as they grow in the same manner that trees do, they were able to track his seasonal travels, and when he encountered injuries that are common during the mating season. They were also able to reconstruct a biography of his life that is nearly as complete as his skeleton!
