In Svalbard, Norway is the great seed bank that houses seeds from all over the countries and from hundreds of years ago; but did you know there is also another kind of bank here in the US that cryopreserves the genetic materials of animals, plants, and microbes? This week’s video is about a research facility in Hawaii that collecting sperm and egg of all the different corals from around the area in order to save their genetic material and to help reestablish coral ecosystems that have been wiped out from the effects of bleaching (where coral dies due to the water temperatures going above the threshold that they can withstand). What an amazing endeavor these researchers are doing in order to help keep coral around for our future generations to experience and love as we have.
